Day School Or Boarding School?

By Susan

Most children are day pupils who attend schools in the independent sector. They often live in areas further away than normal day state school travelers. Sometimes the children live 15 or 20 miles away. If you think days school is the best option for your child then you should take into consideration travelling distances from your home. Consider rail and bus links and if you like the look of a school, but it seems difficult to get to, check whether it runs its own bus service, as many do. If not, there may be other parents in your area with whom you could share the travel.

But you may want to consider the benefits of a boarding school education; don’t dismiss it just because it is unfamiliar. There are more schools to choose from and the trouble and expense of the daily trip can be avoided. Being away from home during term time is something that most children enjoy but it is understood that boarding school is not suitable for every child. Many children have a mixture of day and boarding experience – often in the same school.

Weekly boarding or flexible boarding are options that have increased in popularity recently. Children go back to their home at the end of each week and this suits working parents well. When both parents are tied down by a full time job. Private prep school often helps to free up restrications on time. ‘quality time’ spent with the kids could can actually be improved through this method as parents are free at the end of a busy working week. Most parents choose boarding schools within an hour’s journey from their homes; if they are likely to be moved abroad or to another part of the country, they might choose boarding schools near relatives or close friends.

To help you with choosing a boarding school for your child try putting together a list of the boarding schools which might be suitable. Most boarding schools admit day pupils as well. Your child might like to start school as a day student but enjoy the option of being able to change to a boarder down the road. Many day children, particularly in preparatory schools, take the opportunity to be occasional boarders for a few nights a year. Boarding schools have lots of options and flexibitly so chances are you will find one that is right for you
