By Susan

One thing that is common about hallucinatory sleep paralysis is the vividness and reality of the things that you are seeing. The inability to move in those moments usually puts me in a state of panic especially when I cannot even do something as simple as let out a scream.

The funny thing is that the paralysis sets in to prevent you from doing just that. You are producing actual physical reactions to something that’s just a dream. There is no telling the amount of harm that we would do to ourselves and others if we reacted to everything that went on in our dreams. So unfortunately the change from total sleep to a state of full consciousness is not always a smooth one.

If your sleep happens to be disrupted whilst you are having a dream the paralysis sets in. Trust me I know; uncomfortable does not even come close to describing those few moments that you struggling to move or say something. That is one characteristic of hallucinatory sleep paralysis. It is just too vivid and real.
